Man what a day I had!! It was full of ups and downs but the ups far outweigh the downs! :)

The downs, is that my trolling motor tore up and I will have to have the dealership fix it. No way it should have tore up like it did. I wont go into all that now though.

My day got a late start, though I didnt mind. I took my friend Lisa and her boyfriend BJ. I wasnt sure how 3 on my boat would be but we fished fine. We didnt get to the water until 12:30 to start. Then once we got there I ran around a bunch looking at the river. It was a bit tricky as it was high tide and the banks were flooded over as usual. At one point I had to get off the throttle and trim the motor up quickly because I went out of the river bank and ended up in only a couple feet of water. Scared teh CRAP out of me but I didnt damage anything so all was good and all I needed to do was idle back into the channel. Anyway, once I got going again I checked out another area and decided to stay and fish in the new area longer because BJ and Lisa were tired of running around and wanted to fish.

I put the trolling motor down and thats when I noticed that it wasnt steering properly. The clamp that holds the cables inside the head broke free. Luckily there was a pontoon with some divers there and they had a screw driver I could borrow to t ake the top off the head of the trolling motor. I tried to rig it to work temporarily but it only lasted a few minutes. So then the divers had some pull ties and an idea so between me, BJ and the divers we were able to rig the motor so it would work and steer right. By the time we had that fixed it was after 3. We were dieing to fish so I got on the trolling motor and we went to town.

The new area I was in ended up being a hot one! I had us on fish and big time! Im not sure how many we all caught but Lisa caught a nice 3 lber and some smaller ones as did BJ. I ended up catchin enough to cull if I were in a tournament. I had 2 that were about 4 and one that was about 6 and the last two in my 5 were about 2 a piece. So I figure I had about 18lbs of fish! It was awesome! And to add to the excellence... they were all caught on my loomis! Man that thing sure is sweet!
Only bad thing is, I know I was prefishing and shouldnt have hooked any fish but I didnt care.. I was having too much fun! IF I can get on the same quality fish on the day of my club tournament, I believe my buddies are in for a serious arse wooping the Yankee way ;) Another plus is I smacked that WPT button every time I hooked a fish so I can get right back to those exact areas. I dont believe anyone else will be fishing where I am gonna be but who knows. I guess we will see.

I do know one thing, Lisa and BJ were getting upset at me cuz I kept releasing legal sized fish and all the big fish! lol I told them the bigger the bass, the faster I release it. I explained why but they still ddnt understand why I was releasing good eatin fish. They kept there 3 legal ones but at the end of the day they eventually released them so that was good and it let me see how well my livewell worked.

Now i know I havent really said what I caught my fish on and where i caught them, but (and sorry guys) there are some guys who are in my club that read these boards and well, after the tournament I will talk about what I caught em on and where ;)

Anyway, I'm wiped out and just walked in the door 15 minutes ago. Im going to hit the shower then go to sleep. Man Im gonna sleep so good! Its so awesome having my own boat and finally being able to fish my fish my way at my pace

Hope they fix your TM ( free of charge )
I believe they are gonna have no choice, everything is still under their warranty, and the motor broke due to no fault of my own.

This has shown me one thing though... a major difference between motorguide and minn kota... now correct me if I am wrong and this doesnt apply across the board... but... the part in my minn kota that broke is a bracket that is a molded in part of the lower end of the head itself.. which is all plastic... my motor guide(s) the lower end of the head is made out of metal. Why Minn Kota would use plastic there, especially when the bracket that holds the cables steady is screwed into it, is beyond me.

I wonder if they can replace that head piece of if they just have to go and give me a whole different motor. I dunno.
I also noticed when we opened it up that when its on 24 volt... one of the wires in the head gets hot enogh to literally burn you! I mean that baby was scorching!! There is tape over those wires too that does not look factory placed.. so I believe someone was in that head before.

Whatever the case is, I got a tournament next weekend (the 7th) and Marshalls is going to have to, honor their warranty and do something.

. 18lbs? I'll take 18lbs in any tournament anyday, hope you're still on them for your tourney.
Thats my guesstimate... probably more realistic if I said between 16 and 18.. but yeah I was stoked! The last fish I caught was the 6 lbr..
I kicked myself for not putting all the fish in my livewell so I could weigh the best 5 at the end of my day but I was too afraid of my friends and their filet knife dreams. lol They were really freaking out that I wouldnt let em keep any of the fish I caught.

I hope I can find em there during the tournament too. I honestly dont see why they wouldnt be there but if they arent, I will just adjust. I know one thing I plan on doing and that is studying my maps to find similar areas in case my area is occupied the day of the tournament. Man that would suck but I believe its something I need to prepare for.

I have a couple of fish eating friends that I take out occasionally and I let them no that it's all catch n release on my boat or you can stay home.

Yeah my 100 mile drive home gave me the chance to explain that to them thoroughly lol
After this upcoming tournament, I plan on spending all my weekends on Wateree Lake and invited them. I told them that morning and evening I will be bass fishing but just for them, a couple hours in the middle of the day, we will brim/crappie or catfish so they have fish to bring home. Ive known Lisa for eons and she is the only reason Id consider pausing my bassin during the day for some other type of fishin.

Don't you guys take any pictures? haha. I would like to see that 6lber. Next time bring a camera and take a picture of your good fish. I read allot of posts with folks catching nice bass yet no pics....????

Jared, I feel your pain literally. I too own a Minn Mota and I have broke the exact same piece you did at lake Fork years ago. I also had to jury rig it to make it work that day. What I ended up doing was to drill out the holes that the screws screw into all the way out or through the bottom. I then put a washer and a nut on the outside or bottom and screwed it in tight. The washer added bite to the bottom which held for a while till this happened:

This happened without hitting anything. Anyway, I had to reorder the lower plastic piece which was only $26 I think? The one I had was a different design. Mine only had 2 screw holes holding the metal bracket down. The new ones have 4 holes which hold better. Duh, ya think! :wack: What brain dead moron first came up with only 2 screws holding something that has as much torque as the metal bracket holding down the steering cables. Then on top of that to have it all held together by plastic. Yep, I can't ever imagine a metal screw holding a metal bracket with lots of torque applied to it, in a small plastic piece ever breaking?. Engineers can be idiot's at times. haha.

Oh, I agree with you I think whoever designed this must be a yankee as maybe up in Minnesota or Wisconsin plastic is ok. They don't have timber in the water. But in many southern waters we got timber and lots of it. I also hate how the Minn Kota has that big spring like a joint that is "suppossed" to come out of socket so that you don't tear up your unit when you hit something. Well, unless that was greased up as soon as it came out of the box it WILL NOT come out of socket and deflect off of anything. Instead it will hold square onto the object you hit causing the shaft to get pushed right up under the boat all the way to the hull of the boat. I actually ripped the mount right off the bow of my boat once at lake Fork with that exact same scenario. It was sickening to see that. If that was a Gator Mount system by Motorguide that would have never happened.

Oh well, I wish we had a 3rd major trolling motor company that was on the scene to provide more competition and thus better quality out of all of them. They all have issues in my opinion.

Yeah mine has 4 holes too Keith BUT... only two are/were being used.. and the bracket only has 2 holes in it too. What a lame design!

As far as a camera goes, yep, I had one with me all day long! :lmao: I even had 4 extra batteries (cam only takes 2) and enough memory to store 190 high quality images. However, I just never took it out. Even when Lisa caught her fish I was too anxious to keep fishing and keep winning the battle versus the rivers current that I just turned around, aimed my phones cam and snapped a quickie lol Every time i released one of my fish I kept saying "dang I should have taken a pic" lol I really do have to make more of an effort next time though. I think maybe i will start doing like I would in a tournament and put em all (the best 5 anyway) in the livewell. I guess it couldnt hurt and then I could photo them all when things have slowed down.

Here is the one (and only) pic I snapped with my phones cam yesterday of lisa and her bass. I tried to get her to hold the fish but her boyfriend seemed to want the spotlight. The fish I would guess is about a pound and a half - 2 pounds.
