Using tubes a lot and catching lots of smallies and spots I have had to use this method on most every trip. I think it should be a requirement on lakes with smallies for fishermen to know just like how to measure a keeper.
I had to use this method in march to ensure the nice 5 pounder that engulfed my worm would live to swim another day.
I was able to release her without one drop of blood or damaged gill plate.
I have noticed that when you allow the fish too much time before setting the hook, more often the fish swallows the whole enchilada. I try to set the hook a bit sooner to prevent this situation.
