As some of you know, I leave for Santee Cooper this weekend for a week of non-stop fishing. As I prepare my supplies, clothes, gear etc... I started to wonder how everyone prepares their gear before they head out to fish. On short day trips, I normally go through everything the night before. I check line, retie all my baits, etc... Of course I am headed out on a long trip so now I am respooling all my reels, cleaning out my entire tackle bag, cutting off any and all tags from the eyelets of baits I removed and stowed in a hurry in the past, basically just reorganizing everything.

I find doing this, whether for a day trip or a long trip, almost therapeutic and I enjoy it a lot. How's everyone else feel about this? Do you have any routines you follow? And does anyone have any tips you can share with our members on this topic?

If I am going fishing by myself, I don't really get all wound up about retying lures, etc. After using the Palomar knot, I have found that when going fishing by myself, that it will stand up to the abuse of 2-3 fishing trips.

If I am going fishing with a friend, though, I do go through all the tackle and put lures back where they are supposed to go, I will check the line on my reels, and I will retie all the lures I have tied on.

Then, I will put my tackle bag on the couch, and I will have my rods in my room, ready to go. And I usually will be awake well before time to set out, so I will make coffee, and get other things ready for my parents, when they get up. :)

I have 2 boxes I use for fishing. The first is a real small one with a few top water, cranks, spinner, buzz and a few different plastics I use when PLEASURE fishing around here ( I take what Ive normaly caught them on before with )

The second is my ' suitecase ' lol that I use for my tournaments .( have to be prepaired for anything, dont I ? lol )

I normaly take care of my equiptment after I come back from fishing. I ALWAYS cut the hook off my line of any plastics ive used that day and throw it away. ( may sound like a waist and maybe it is, but I do it anyways ) I do not store my rods with any plastics on them. I THINK the salt from the plastics will eat away at the line over a period of time , so im not taking the chance.

Also, I will cut some line off my topwater rod, and then retie it back on with a lure cover. Same goes for cranks, spinner etc.... cut line off then retie it.

This way im always ready to go. ( infact going prefishing in the morning on the Harris Chain , and im ready to go lol)
