Ran across this research published by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Inland Fisheries Division – just sharing the science – no infomercials here, just facts.

The average tournament fisherman doesn’t catch enough fish to overcrowd the boats’ livewell and doesn’t need supplemental oxygen, their aerator or a water pump is all they need. Only fishermen that catch a lot of fish and overcrowd their livewells need supplemental oxygen for their catch or let them suffocate. Adding more, bigger water pumps won’t fix this low oxygen problem regardless of how much air or water you pump through the livewell in the summer.

So how is a fisherman to know IF he needs supplemental oxygen in his livewell? Simple – you know what dying/dead/sick fish look like in your livewell and you take the “dead-fish punishment (penalty).” The problem and the answer should be crystal clear.
