Pre-Spawn

Pre-Spawn is my favorite seasonal period because it is the time when a catch of a lifetime can occur. Following the cold water period of late winter, pre-spawn begins when the water temperate approaches 55 degrees down to the depth of light. The female bass leave their deep sanctuaries and stage near structure breaks, that holds baitfish and clay or rocky soil where crawdads are coming out of hibernation, located close to the spawning flats. Wood cover like trees or brush on deep break lines is ideal if that type of cover is available.
The big bass are hungry and feeding to get ready for the spawn. These bass are usually in small groups or 5 to 15 fish and stay in the staging area for a few weeks or until the water warms to 58 to 60 degrees, then begin to cruise the spawning flats. Depending on the depth of light the big bass will stay a few feet above good light pentration and are establishing the territory they plan to spawn in.
The primary prey source for these big bass are emerging crawdads and baitfish. The presentations that trigger these bass are reaction baits that look like the prey fish or jigs and creature baits that mimic crawdads. Swim baits, spinner baits, crank baits, plastic worms  and jigs. The emerging crawdads are green/brown in color, the baitfish will be predominately light color due to the colder water and your lures should be in those hues. It is a little early for salamanders or waterdogs to be a food source factor, however big bass will eat them if available and kill them on sight during the spawn. Bluegill and crappie are also a good baitfish during this time. Eels are a cold water food source and the darker color plastic worms and jig trailers work well.
On larger reservoirs the deeper water zones tend to warm later than the protected flats near deep water points or channels. Therefore you can follow the pre-spawn from the north west wind protected areas to the more wind prone areas and extend the pre-spawn period without targeting spawner's.
Smallmouth and spots tend to spawn at 58 to 62 degrees, where largemouth tend to spawn at 62 to 65 degrees. The bigger bass may spawn deeper down to 15 feet if the water clarity is very good or 6 to 2  feet in off color water. The smaller bass tend to be up in 1 to 3 feet. Clay with gravel/sand near wood / brush or tulle's is preferred for largemouth and rock/gravel for spots and smallmouth.

Hey Tom, here's one for you on the pre-spawn. I live in west Houston. The water temps here rarely get below 50 - 55. Last year I was watching for the fish to be moving up and somehow missed the first part of the spawn. I have adequate glasses for seeing but in some of the waters I fish here, these bass will start spawning here probably in about 2 - 3 weeks and go into Feb. if the weather remains cool. I read your posts on the seasons but when you are talking about fall and those weather principles I am in the dead of winter. I say dead, Tues. it was 35 in the morning today it's 71. What gives? Anyway, I read everything that you and Jim post. I always thought I was a better fisherman than what I really was until you guys showed me how much I didn't know. The reason there aren't that many posts are because after you and Jim post, it takes awhile for us knuckleheads to absorb all of that new knowledge because for us it is new. You guys have known this stuff for awhile. Our light bulbs are just starting to come on. Let me tell you what I do.... I print everything I feel I need off of this boad and others. I have a three-ring binder with all this info in it. It goes with me to all of my big water. When I get there if I am in doubt, I pull these notes and use them to assess the situation and try to find the fish. I have definitely become a much better fisherman since I started reading you guys posts on the Bassmaster board and then here. I am on this baord 3-5 times a day looking for new info that I can use. So before you start feeling like there is no participation, just remember, there is alot of guys like me that say ohhhh, that's how or ohhhhh that's why. There's participation, it's just in another form. Thanks for your posts and Jim as well. Once I feel a little more confident in my style of fishing and presentations I will be adding my two cents every chance I get but until them, I have to learn. Therefore it's simple...You guys teach, we learn, then when new board members arrive, maybe we can beat you guys to some of the questions that are asked.
Thanks for your time. It is very much appreciated.

Definitely no need for anyone's feathers to ruffle. This as well as others is a board of many different folks with a lot of different ideas. I will have to admit though Tom and Jim, some of the posts you guys make just baffle me. I too realize how under educated I was in Bass fishing. It takes me a while to absorb some of the things you guys say. That whole color and contrast deal you guys replied to my post about the crankbaits just about killed me. It took a while to understand, but once I did, I have doubled my crankbait catch, and has become one of my go to lures for all types of cover. I have learned why the bill is different, longer, wider, or skinnier. I know what applications to use them for now where as when I joined this board, I did not own one crank. Your seasonal periods has been awesome. Everytime I go fishing, I read those posts, and assess my situation. It has helped me tremendously. I really don't think KeithsCatch was trying to offend. His question reminded me of the question I asked Jim on the old Insider board. Everytime he posted something, it seemed people were just ready to pounce and criticize Jim for what he was saying. It was wrong and I couldn't understand why he did it. I thanked Jim for joining this board when he reminded me it was I who followed him. You guys are awesome. Please keep up the great posts as I am absorbing as much as I can. Thanks again!!!!
