The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Cabela's presented the Annual "Louisiana Women in the Wild" Fishing Basics Workshop on Saturday, April 21 at the Cabela's Gonzales location.

LDWF staff from the Education Section and Fisheries Extension Office provided instruction in fishing basics to 31 participants for a one-day workshop packed with hands-on demonstrations for the ladies.

Instruction included fishing tackle and techniques, boater education, boat hauling/trailering, launching a boat, casting, fish identification, fish cleaning, fish tagging, LDWF Sportfish Restoration activities, fish otilith removal and the aging process.

Hands-on activities included backing up a trailered boat, rigging fishing poles, baiting hooks, casting, tagging redfish, cleaning largemouth bass, and fishing in the Cabela's pond. Each participant received complimentary outdoor items from Cabela's and Fisheries Extension, as well as literature from the Education Section for other outdoor activities the department offers.

The next scheduled "Louisiana Women in the Wild" Workshop featuring "Hunting Basics" is scheduled for August 25, 2012 at the Waddill Outdoor Education Center in Baton Rouge. For more information, contact Karen Crabtree at (318) 766-8144 or [email protected].
