It's time for the annual Lake Eaton Kids' Fishing Derby at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Hunter Education Training Center in the Ocala National Forest.

The derby is free for 5- to 12-year-olds and will be from 8:30 a.m. until noon Saturday and April 22.

Fish and Wildlife biologists will close off an area of Lake Eaton to general fishing before and during the derbies, so that the kids can fish there.

For safety reasons, only cane poles provided by the commission will be allowed.

In addition to fishing, children will be able to participate in a casting contest and an activity called "Bugs and Critters," in which the kids wade into the lake with dip nets and learn about the creatures they scoop up. After a morning of fishing and fun, they will be treated to lunch.

Space is limited to the first 100 participants per derby. To sign up, call the Fish and Wildlife office in Ocala at 352-732-1225 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.

The Hunter Education Training Center is about 81/2 miles north of State Road 40 off County Road 314 in the Ocala National Forest.

I wonder if Texas has something like that? That is how we need to get kids away from all the video games and movies and introduce them to nature and just being outside. There was something similar that we had in Georgetown, Tx. Their was a fee for all kids and adults but I don't know if it was for charity or if it was for the town itself but anyway a group of people had tons of catfish in the lake that was blocked off and they were pretty much starving them for 1 to 2 days. Come time to fish, you could catch them on anything. My sister caught a 5 lber with bubble gum. LOL

Let us know how everything turns out.
