BaitCasting Reel Prob

3945 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  hi steel basser
I have two reels. One old Ryobi baitcast reel (works like a champ) and last year I got a Shimano Callisto CSO100 kinda cheap reel $35-40... Anyway ever since I bought the fool thing I back lash like a mad man with it and can not figure what adjustments I need to make. I've been messing with the control knob and the dial on the left side of the reel and I may be doing more harm than good. I need help! Makes an annoying buzzing noise too when I cast. Any help is appreciated! Solution could be I need to pay more to get more? :p

When you buy the reels they should come with instructions on how to adjust it so you won't backlash. If I can find my instructions then I will post it here for you unless somebody else comes along and does it first.
If its making noise when you cast it not disengaging the spool totally. I'd take it back and get an exchange or put a few more bucks with it and get a Citica. This place has them as cheap as you will find them anywhere. Delo's
Chuck it in the drink. I have done this and it works every time. No more giving you problems.
Found this on Shimano's website about backlashing...

VBS weights need to be adjusted to the bait you are using. Turn all weights on and start casting while turning one off at a time until casting distance is good and backlashes stop.
Easy Mag is not adjusted correctly. Turn magnet up to 10 and reduce one point at a time to achieve good casts and reduced backlashes. Cast control cap is not adjusted correctly. Adjust cap until the right tension is achieved.

Problem is... I do not know what VBS weights are and where they are on the reel? :banghead:

Woohoo  I figured out my backlashing problem! After reading the info on Shimano's wesbsite I went outside and started messing with the cast control and easy mag and I turned the Easy Mag to 0 and closed the cast control knob shut. Not sure what that means, but it works! Neighbors prolly think I'm nuts casting a fishing pole in my backyard. :neener:

I have the same reel, have had it for over a year now, and it works great for the money. But I will admit that it isn't a chronarch. I use mine almost exclusively for c-rigs, so I don't get many backlashes with it. ::) As for the whining noise on the cast, it sounds like you need to lube it up. If that don't do it, pony up the bucks for an upgrade. I practice my pitchin and flippin all the time in my yard. Catchin' anything? seems to be the usual comment from passersby. :D
Didn't catch a limit, but I caught two quality oak trees and one lousy gum tree :dance01: Even lost my 1/2 oz weight I had tied on the end to get my reel to work

OK so it was bad advice SORRY.
I did that once. It was a Quantum Accurist (not PT) that the gears gave out in. My line was still on the bank when it hit bottom. I tried to retrieve it, but the line broke. I walked past a weigh-in to get back to my truck. I got several funny looks. :violin:
