what about spring fed lakes that have no current? You might have coves and points and little water running into the lake from a hillsides what would you look for besides bait fish schooling on top of water?

nearly all bodies of water will have some current generated by light wind. Current speed doesn't need to be visible to be there, a slight 100 yard water movement per hour is enough current to push plankton and position baitfish to activate bass.

Tom
How would you determine such a light currents presence, direction, and speed?

The fall turnover always comes up from time to time and this link is a s good as any I read; http://www.islandnet.com/~see/weathe.../turnlakes.htm
Hope this helps to understand what happens when a lake turns over.
Out west in deep structured lakes we live by the thermocline data most of then year. Our lakes do turn over and usually make the transition very slowly, however sometimes a cold front with high winds will cause a quick turnover and we can have massive shad die offs as a result and loose some bass in the process, due to loss of DO and fast water temperature change of more than 10 degrees.

Bumped this back up due to zero replies, should have made it a stand alone topic.
