When you say large cats, I generally think of two species, the blue cat, and the flathead. Both can grow to enormous sizes.
I like to throw a cast net for shad, and do a little perch jerking from the local water, for some reason I think they prefer fish from their own environment. I try to keep the shad and the perch alive and as fresh as possible, shad can be a real challenge. I use large spinning equipment with heavy weights, 2-3 oz and large octopus style hooks. I hook a live bluegill just below the dorsal fin and scale him about half way, this allows him to give off more scent, I then take and cut 1-2 shad depending on size into several pieces and place it on the hook as well.
My thought is that this gives the fish the best of both worlds, a strong scent in the water and the vibration of the struggling bluegill.
I have had good results using this method, and have caught several fish in the 40-50 lb range over the years.
