How to Make Wooden Fishing Lures & Spinners
By Steve Smith,
Print this article Making your own lures is rewarding. Lure making is a rewarding craft because you catch fish on a project you built yourself. Wooden lures are one of the more popular types of lures to build. The wood is readily available, and shaped with hand held or power tools.
Making your lures gives you freedom in color choice, shape, body design and patterns. So, you cast the type of lure you want to make and catch the type of fish you want to catch.

1
Draw the basic pattern of your lure body on a wood block. Draw both top and side view patterns so a pattern exists on each side. The wood block should be slightly longer, wider and deeper than the final size of the lure. Any type of wood will work including pine, maple or birch.
2
Cut the design pattern out using a scroll saw. Follow the lines closely to get a precise cut. Allow extra wood in your cut shape rather than cutting too close, however. The wood is easier to take off than it is to put back on.
Reassemble the pieces together and fasten with clear tape. Then cut the top view of the pattern using the scroll saw. Now, you have a single shape that has been cut from both the top and sides.
4
Carve the shape with a sharp carving knife until you have a final lure shape. Then sand it with 200 and then 400 grit sandpaper to a very smooth finish.
5
Mark a small pen dot on the tip, tail and body of the lure for the hooks and eye loop. Drill out these holes with a 1/32 drill bit.
6
Paint the lure to your liking using spray paint. An easy method is to set the lure flat on a piece of newspaper, spray paint the top in one color by passing the pray paint directly over the top. Allow it to dry. Then turn the lure over and spray paint the bottom in another color (usually silver). Allow it to dry and the attach your hardware.
