The Black Drum are Back
Every May and June the Black Drum come through the Delaware Bay. These bohemoths range from the little Puppy Drum you may find in some rivers earlier to the larger ones heading through the Bay to spawn. They can average 30 + pounds but a lot of them are in the sixty, seventy and eighty pound weight class. Occasionally a one hundred plus pounder is hooked as well. I heard tell of one caught last year that may have been a new record. I think it weighed in at 119 pounds, but somehow lost some weight by the time it was officially weighed.
If you hook into a good one, it is like hauling in a ton of bricks. A really good fight !
I am lucky enough to be offered a spot on a boat every season by an old friend. We head out this Friday most likely to some destination in Cape May NJ. The cool thing is you use the same fishfinder rigs that you use for Stripers and can occasionally hook a striper as well. They seem to love the Clam or even Bunker. The meat is tasy as well, at least I think so. So wish us luck and I hope to be posting some nice pictures of our days catch.
Go Out and get yourself a Drum, You won't regret it
