Default Smith Mountain lake 6/13/08

A buddy of mine got a new boat and we took it out of Indian Point for its maiden voyage on big water. Put in at 6:45pm. Found very little traffic comparitively. 78-82 deg, slightly stained water. Ran down to a series of ledges and riprap points encircling coves. Found shad active on the surface and many bass on the graph... and got the of a lifetime ! I did land a nice 22" flathead, but that was the only water-dwelling critter we got to say hello to. Anyhow, in the future, I'll know that cranks, spinners, t-rigged plastics, C-rigged plastics, buzzbaits, Pop-rs, Spooks, Rage Tail Shad, Storm Wildeye swimbaits, drop shot and jigs don't work . I'd better go look through my bait boxes for some old helicopter lures! They gotta be the ticket. Hey, that's fishing, ain't it?...Maybe I'll see if I can pull my ol' friend away from yardwork for a re-match against those wiley bass !

Ya'll be good and be safe!

Well, F4F, I shoulda used the TNT ... Went back to SML for a club tournament Saturday and, although I didn't get skunked thankfully, all I could manage was + + = 9th out of 11 boats. The poor boater that had to drag me with him zero'd and snagged 11th. But all that's not important- Everybody had a good time and no one got their eye put out. I'll keep fishing even if I get goose egged the rest of the year. No worries. The best part was weigh in when the oldest fellow in the club (easily close to 80) pulls two 5 pounders out of the livewell and three more that went 3 pounds or better. All off one point. This dude was also a non-boater and won the tournament. What an incredible day that was for him. Another guy snagged a 5 pounder but didn't have the weight needed to win. The winner brought his fish to the boat on a t-rigged 6" Carolina pumpkin lizard and a 10" plum worm, similar to a Zoom MagII or Ol' Monster style. He was fishing from the opposite side from the boater in 12'-18' water. Great tournament and great to see that fellow win the day!

Seems logical for him to win seeing he was fishing out in deeper water while the boater was casting toward the bank in shallower water. He probably unknowingly put tht old man on the prime fishing spot. Good for him to make it count.

Thanks for the post and glad you had fun. That is the main thing anyway.
