Default Smith Mountain Lake

Fished Hardy Rd. area to Moorman's 4/13. Visibility 1-2', temp. from 50-62. Caught nothing off banks- all bass from 5'-12'. Threw a C-rig (Zoom salt n pepper 5" lizard, Matzuo motor oil chartruese 10" worm, GP/red Baby Brush Hog, Zoom Fluke Arkansas Shiner, Zoom GP Ultr-Vibe Speed Craw), red craw and brown craw patterned cranks and a white, willowleaf (triple blade spinner). Only three fish all day (5 hours) and all three off C-rig. This was a huge change from 4/12 when my buddy and I caught around thirty in very stained, white capping water at a local reservoir.

Smith Mnt. has always been a tough lake for me, but it'll come. In my opinion, the takes need to get bigger if we expect BASS to bring the Elite Series back one day.

By the way, DavidVA- I'm heading out to The Chick this summer-- I'm hoping you might have some advice for this mountain man!

Do you mean Chickamauga, in Tennessee?? If so, drop down and fish the Riverpark, and catch a few of the spaaats to take back for the freezer.

Hey, Castaway! Actually, I'll be fishing the Chickahominy in Eastern VA. But, being a War Between the States buff, I'd like to fish the Chickamauga, too! Just curious (I haven't researched it yet), but what exactly is a spaaat?

Well, that makes sense. Never looked a spot in the eye yet, but I'd like to. They've got them in several places in VA, I've just never had occassion to land one...

Hey guys,
Anyone have any tips for SM Lake this year- going up this w-end with a buddy to see if we can do some good. I know water temps around 58 deg lately. Fish were up 10 days ago but pushed out to the first break with this cooler weather lately. Should we fish uplake or down? Creeks or main lake pockets? Some say stay up around Hardy, some say Blackwater arm is best. I'm not used to the highland reservoirs and I want to put my friend on some behemobasses!

Thanks fellow Bassholes-
Carl

Hello, Fellow Fisherfolk! Finally got this computer machine workin' right (I hope). Got to go back out on SML and had a good day. Water at 71 deg. and slightly stained. Found fish in all spawn patterns- pre, spawn and post. Most fish came from deep water docks and the largest had beat up tails.

Most productive technique was the C-rig. 2' fluoro leader with a 3/8 oz. bullet weight. GP Centipedes and coffee tubes (?) were the basses choice for the day.

Caught one nice 3 pounder on a deep diving chartreusse shad crankbait off a main lake point. It felt like 10# coming up from 15 ft. (I tried that Elias technique of retrieving the lure with the pole in the water and it really does work). Letting the bait smack into structure seemed to be the trigger.

The strangest part of the trip was my buddy watching me catch fish on the C-rig. He decided he'd had enough skunk so he tied on a C-rig himself. It brought back memories of the monster backlashes I got with a baitcaster the first few times I tried to cast that rig! He got saddled with one after another and they were bad . We finally got him to think about casting the weight, not the bait and he slowly got the hang of it.
