Default Heddon Collecting Tips

I've already made a few posts with tips about Heddon collecting...but will try to consolidate stuff in this topic from now on.

I recently did a little reasearch about "box catalogs"...ie...the little catalogs that came inside the lure boxes...and this is what I've pieced together so far.

There is a book called Heddon Legacy that supposedly has info about catalogs...but with me still unemployed...I can't spend the money on it

Anything with a questionmark in the description means I haven't been able to confirm the date of the catalog...but I made notes as to my reasoning for the date.

One thing you need to watch on these are the remakes. They did some reissues and if you are new to this and see some going for a high price, don't think they all will go that high. Ebay is full of scammers. Know what the remake lures have on them different from the originals.

Its like when Coke redid the Christmas Coke bottles. The only way to tell which were the reprints and which were made in 1923 was the bottom ring connecting the city to the state on the bottom of the bottle.

Just thought I would throw that heads up out there.

That is a good point Jeff

Mostly...if the lures have white in the eyeballs...they are usually newer...say from the late 1950's. You will also see some with "cream" color around the pupils. I'll do a pic of some of this later.

As for the re-issued wood lures starting in the mid-1960's...they have the word "original" stamped on the belly. I'm attaching a pic showing what I mean.

And there's something new I learned today of the so-called 1948 catalog above.

There are 2 different versions...and I've attached a pic describing the differences. I'm sure the one is older than 1948....possibly 1946.

It's amazing what can happen with old lures...and Heddon is one of but MANY companies that have truly old things.

Here's a lure that I got mixed in with a pile of junk in an auction on Ebay. The pics hid the damage to many of the lures so I was not a happy camper to be sure.

Last spring I saw a lure similar to this one go up for auction on Ebay for $85...no takers.

About 2 weeks later he relisted his lure...and got $65 for it.

I did a little research...and discovered that both his and mine were from the pre-L-rig days (before 1915).

A couple weeks ago I had an inquiry from an Ebay buyer looking for Heddon 5 hooks minnows. Told him about mine...and the $65 one...and sent him pics. He asked for a price...I said $50...and he bought it

Just goes to show...just because a lure looks like a beater...doesn't necessarily mean it's not worth anything.

It also goes to show...just because you get a plie of sh*t...doesn't mean that you can grow roses
