I agree with Jared on color, something with a white bottom and then something with a dark bottom. Rythm is everything even with a popper, some times they want it fast sometimes they want it just chugged in place. Get it up close to the cover and just play with different retrieves, till you find what they want, nothing more exciting than seeing a toilet flush under a topwater bait.

Use stout line, I like braid for all my topwater baits since it floats, and use a rod with some backbone, you will need to drive the hooks home, and be able to turn the fish from the cover. But you dont want it so stout that you rip the hooks out of the fishes mouth.

I tend to disagree about the whole color aspect of it. I have had days where bass would only hit a certain colored body of popper and would completely ignore another color presented in the exact same fashion.

I feel that baitfish colors are recognizable in the shallows and that bass will react to a "glare" that is around a lure.

The day I speak of they were chasing bluegills with shad present but wouldn't attack a shad patter .....only a bluegill pattern. That is the reason 70% of my poppers are Academy....they have realistic finishes.

I totally agree with letting them sit for a short before moving any bait.Any top water you should let sit.
