Default Heat Stabilizer?

Is it a must all of the time or only in certain applications? When it is necessary, how much do you use and how is it added?

I have to use it when pouring translucent baits to keep the scorch down. I work with 2 oz amounts of plastic and add about 1/2 teaspoon on reheats.

I have been pouring baits for several years.I use Calhoun plastic and I have never added heat stabilizer to my plastics and Do not have scorching problems. I started cooking in pans on hot plates and learned how the plastics work. I think this is one disadvantage of using the microwave for heating plastics. It does not let new people to understand what all the plastic does when it cooks. If you take your time and watch your plastic temps you should never have to add stabilizer. I can run White plastic in a presto pot for over an hour and never have it change colors on me. If you are having to use stabilizer in 2 ounces of plastic you are running way to hot.

I too have been pouring plastic for several years mostly with hot plates but also with the microwave. I have always had to fight scorching. I have also never used any Calhoun plastic. When my current supply runs out, I'll have to give it a try. Which of their plastics do you recommend?

Jigman
I have 3 different suppliers of plastic for day in and day out I use Calhoun. It has been the most consistent plastic I have ever used. I have tried about every plastic on the market today. And yes I am still looking for the Magic Plastic that I know has to be out there but so far I have not found anything. I try my best to keep good products and I will continue the hunt for the Best Plastic but so far I will have to say our best is Calhoun. The 1504 is the Super Soft, 2101 is a Standard Soft Plastic. 2601 is a medium compound. and the 2901 is a hard or Tube type plastic.

I will be ordering your 4" tube mold with my BD money from my M-I-L next week and I'll add some of that 2901 with the order. How many 4" tubes can I get (ball park) for each gallon of plastic?

Bear, can your tube mold with the skirt be poured or does it have to be injected.
