"Junk Fishing", TONIGHT's Chat, October 18th, at 8:30pm EST
It's the fall and that means that one day it may be warm and sunny outside while the next day the temperatures can be teetering on "BRRRR!". Yet, we adapt. We throw on a jacket or take off a sweatshirt. We can do this easily and in a matter of seconds.
The fish are not so fortunate. Their bodies rely on the temperature of their surroundings. Hot one day and cold the next can make fish do strange things. It can shut them down. It can turn them on. It can make them not act any differently than they did yesterday.
As anglers we need to be ready for these unpredictable conditions that fall brings with it. Colder nights, migrating baitfish, dying vegetation, lakes turning over and those are only a couple of the obstacles that autumn throws our way.
Versatility is the key to staying productive on the water. Some days we may get on the water and find out that spinnerbaits are what the fish want. Other days we find that a crankbait gets the fish to the boat. Then there are the days where putting together a solid pattern is not unlike trying to get blood from a stone. It's during these days that "Junk Fishing" can come to our rescue.
A half of a dozen rods lined up on the deck, each rigged with a different bait. The first fish came off of a crankbait, the second may come off of a jerkbait and the third - we will just have to keep tossing baits at them until we figure that out. This is "Junk Fishing" at it's finest and, TONIGHT, this will be the focus of our chat.
