Default Cold Front During Spawn

Jr and I have a tourney on Sat and the high is only suppose to be 51 degrees. Water temps and been 64 ish and some of the fiosh have moved up on their beds. A cold front blew in today and we are suppose to get a couple of inches of rain tomorrow (Friday). Temps are suppose to dip down to 37 Friday night. Forecast is calling for sprinkles and wind on Sat. Do you think the fish that are bedding will 1) move off beds and hold tight to cover in the area 2) Stay on beds or 3) move to closest deep water and wait for the weather to warm up again. We had a game plan going into it, but with the cold front coming now, I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out what to do. Any thoughts??

Thats a toughy, I was wondering the same thing myself. I'm close enough to you that we got the same nasty coldfront and even though I don't have a tournament I will be prefishing for an ABA next weekend and I think tomorrow is going to be really tough. I would think that they would back off the bank alittle bit and sit on the first drop off

I had similar conditions in my last weekend series tournament. Most of the people who planned on hitting the beds couldn't find any on them. Most of the bigger bass were caught in deeper water on carolina rigs and jigs but the bite was slow. I did catch a limit and culled with a shakey head off of steep banks 4 to 5 feet deep and also concrete structures that has sun on them around 5 feet deep as well. I also caught some around some boat ramps in the blow out holes created by the motors when pulling on to the trailers. Good luck and I hope some of these ideas help you out.

Thanks guys. I think we will check the beds and if they are not there, we'll hit some cover and if that doesn't work, we'll head up North to the deeper lakes and fish the weed line on the drop offs and the points. The Power Poles will come in handy tomorrow. I'll let you know how we do.

I'll be curious to see how you did...I would probably make sure I had some jerkbaits tied on also...work them real slow over slightly deeper water adjacent to flats, if the fish aren't on the beds...

Well, it sure was miserable out there today (38 degrees, big wind and rain), but somehow we we able to bring home a limit...don't ask me how, but we did! There were 34 boats and we were one of 7 boats that brought in a limit. Our total weight for 5 fish was 8.91. The winners had 14.9 I believe with a 4.7 as their kicker fish. I guess some of the fish were still on their beds, but the water temps ranged between 55-59 degree where we fished, and everything was pretty muddy. If they were on their beds, we sure couldn't see them. All of our fish were caught close to cover in narrow channels on wacky rig and T-rig senkos. We had 5 fish in the well by 10:30 AM and we culled the smallest one at about 12:30. Biggest fish was 2.4. We missed a check by 2/10ths of a pound. I am really happy with the 7th place finish, especially since a lot of the guys on this circuit have been fishing these water for many years. This is a our 3rd year fishing this circuit and I feel confident that we will get a top 3 this year. My kid really kept us going today as the "old man" could have easily been talked into calling it quits without much coaxing. So, I guess when a spring cold fronts hits the "chain of Pain", some of the fish remain on their beds, cuz I overhead a couple of conversations confirming the top 3-4 teams was definitely bed fishing.

It's great you got some action. Next time figure on a lag of X days between air temperature drops and water temp drop at spawning depth. Daily sun warms, nights cool but not as much difference as daily sun effects. I say "X" days because of the slower warming in clear water compared to water full of things that can hold heat. An exception is clear shallow water over a dark spongy bottom that absorbs and holds heat. On the big day I'd drop a thermometer to whatever depth beds are supposed to be and fish it if the temp range is right. If the temp drops a bit too low bass usually don't move far, just a few feet deeper to the nearest comfort level. They will check the bed areas and resume spawning when conditions are minimally good.
