Default Late Summer and Early Fall buzz baiting

*** BUZZBAITS.***
Bass are now active and chasing all kinds of prey such as minnows, bugs, frogs basically anything that moves and catches their attention. Buzzbaits are a very simple bait to use. Anyone from the first time angler to the seasoned pro can use and catch bass with these baits. I often call them idiot baits because any idiot can cast it and reel it in. It's the commotion and action of the bait that attracts the bass and gets them to attack it. Bass attack buzzbaits for many different reasons such as hunger, curiosity, territoriality, and other types of aggression. I have seen the most wicked and violent strikes in my 40 years of bass fishing while using a buzzbait.
First, I want to locate the bass. Usually, I will look for weeds or weed edges. I cast along the edges of the weeds to search for active fish. Then I move the technique to cover the area over the weeds. I look for the greenest healthiest weeds I can find. The greener the weeds, the more oxygen they produce the more active the fish are and the more likely you are to catch fish.
The easiest way to use a buzzbait is to use a medium heavy 6 1/2 ft to 7 ft rod. It can be either a bait casting set up or a spinning rod. Cast the bait out and right before it hits the water start reeling so when the bait hits the water it doesn't sink. As soon as it hits the water it starts on its way back towards you and acts like something attempted to attack the bait and the bait is fleeing away. Just use a nice steady retrieve and once in a while twitch your rod tip to give the bait a little action. Keep casting until you exhaust the area. If the bass are there, believe me, they will hit the buzzbait either out of hunger or aggression.

Another area to concentrate on is wooded areas such as stumps or lay downs. Cast the buzzbaits past the wood and retrieve the bait towards you bringing the bait next to the strike zone. Always be prepared for the strike. When the bass strikes the bait DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT SET THE HOOK UNTIL YOU FEEL THE FISH ON THE LINE. One of the biggest mistakes fishermen make is setting the hook on bass to early. Just keep casting to the cover and you will find that buzzbait fishing is the most exciting way to catch bass. Not only does it catch a great deal of bass but usually the biggest fish of the year will come on the buzzbait. In the next blog, we will go into more depth on the techniques used to catch bass using my favorite buzzbait, The Cavitron.
