Sure Bet For Summer Bass? Try a Simple Shaky Head

It's been five years since Luke Clausen first used a shaky head worm rig in bass tournament competition but the Yamaha pro has been dedicated to the technique ever since. That's because he won that tournament, the 2004 Wal-Mart® FLW® Championship, and its $500,000 first prize.

"I honestly do not think there is a better lure presentation if you simply want to catch fish now in the summer," notes Clausen, who has also won the Bassmaster® Classic. "It's simple and it's subtle so it doesn't spook fish, which is important now because the bass have received heavy fishing pressure since early spring and they're usually a little more wary.

This is a great little article! The Shakey Head has been around forever but its only been in recent years that it was actually named and made popular. In South Carolina on these heavily pressured waters, the shakey head is a very common technique. :D

Good article indeed. I have some Shakey head jigs, but the weeds are too thick up here already to use the size/weight I am using. I have to downsize a couple of sizes I think. I haven't given them much water time yet, so I am by no means knowledgeable on this technique yet. :dunno:

I have tried wacky rigging a bit, but not a lot this summer. Right now I have been having a lot of hits just on a Yum Craw Papi to try something different.

Here in Alabama, the shaky head is my go to bait. I love to fish them near and around docks.. This is one bait I know that can beat the Heat..

I love the shakey head here in S.C. I make them my self. I pour them by the 100. People buy the crap out of them here. It will put fish in the boat all year long even in the winter time. I make the football type, they work best for me. I also rig them with a craw around rocks. They are awesome. bassin101mg.

You don't have to use a "shakey" worm, you can use a craw or creature or tube. Something different, & sometimes that makes a difference. I am starting to use 10lb braid with no leader, Fireline is the same diameter as 4lb mono, & Spider Wire stealth is the same as 2lb mono. When the bite is subtle it really helps. I have no problem fighting the fish with a 7' med action spinning rod. Mo, try "shaking" as the bait falls, this will help it get down through the weeds, the real problem is the hangups but if it is the only way to get fish it's no problem.

Good tip Rodney...Thanks...I'll give that a try...I have to give this technique some dedictaed water time and get my confidence level up on it.
One of the things I'll have to overcome with this presentation most likely is my impatience when fishing. I always feel like I have to be moving, moving, moving. It's a problem I've always had when fishing...
