Wack! Wack!  Ok, what is this anyways.  I have never owned a big boat/outboard, and am looking to buy one soon.  A used boat.  On some of the listings, I see that some boats are equipped with a "hot foot".  What is that exactly?  Thanks  The Bassholes

A hot foot is simply a foot throttle, just like the one you use in a car.  They disconnect the throttle cable from the forward reverse control lever and connect it to the hot foot.  The old throttle lever is now just used to put the boat into either forward or reverse and the hot foot controls the engine speed.  Its spring loaded and will go back to idle if your foot comes off, I like them because you can keep both hands on the steering wheel, especially if you have your trim mounted on the steering wheel.

Thanks mlsims, you also mentioned trim...what is that?  I am going to have a lot of learning to do when I get my new (used) boat.

Trim is the movement of the motor up and down, usually located on the inside of the control lever, where you can operate it with your thumb.  Most boats with larger motors and a hotfoot will also locate a trim control on the steering wheel, or the steering column, much like a turn signal control on your vehicle, you can operate it with your fingers without taking your hands off the steering wheel.  Typically you trim the motor all the way down, to take off and get the boat up on plane, then trim the motor up as you gain speed and as you trim the motor up the bow will lift, raising the boat out of the water untill you get the boat up on its running pad.

If this is your first boat, you will probably want to get a friend who has a boat, to go out with you the first couple times, just to show you how all this works properly.  It gets kind of technical to explain exactly how a trim system works, since you have trim cylinders and a big tilt cylinder, which all work together, and on some boats its quite possible to over trim the engine, then you get into overreving the engine, prop cavitation, or worse you can get a blowout running at speed, (thats never good).  It would just be best to have someone who knows how to operate a boat go with you the first couple times.

Thanks again mlsims...as I said, I have a lot of learning to do.  I will definitely do what you suggested.  I will try to find someone who knows a bit about the trim and have them go with me.  That would help considerably.
