Different strokes for different folks. I like Trilene XL for general use, but I use European or Japanese mono if I can find it for my UL outfits. Silver thread was a great line. Spiderwire mono seems like a pretty good line, with less stretch than most others. I seldom use braid I can't stand the sound of it sawing my guides and tips and whipping on the rod blank. I do, however use it on topwater Striped bass fishing and for jigging heavy vegetation. It will bend main spool shafts tear up reel bearings and snap good rods if one is not careful.

I can't speak to baitcasters, but for spinning, I prefer Trilene XL. TransOptic also gets a LOT of use on my rods. I like the 8 lb test in the TO.

When i use monofilament line it is always P-Line. I tend to use the Fluoroclear, which is a monofilament with a fluorocarbon coating. The knot strength is very good, the abrasion resistance is A+, and the line strength is also pretty amazing.

You are asking a Chevy vs Ford vs Dodge kind of question though. There is no BEST in line. There is Best For Me/You, but not Best.

When i use Fluorocarbon line i use P-Line 100% fluorocarbon for spinning and P-line halo for casting.

Fluoroclear is actually a copolymer line so it is not technically mono. It has different characteristics than mono. I use it and like it so far, but for actual mono, it is hard to beat Berkley Big game for baitcasters....that stuff is tough as nails. I also used to use Trilene XT.

I have since quit using actual mono for everything except topwaters. It can be a nightmare on spinning gear and have found braid to be my best choice.
