Default Lowrance Elite CHIRP units

I want to replace the front mounted Fish finder unit I currently have and (dont like).

Have a reservation for most of Febr. at Roland Martins Marina on Lake OKeechobee.

Has anyone started using the newer Lowrances with Chirp..........Don't even know what that is all about, but I had a Lowrance paper graph back in the 80s and it gave great detail.

Have no experience with all the "bells and whistles" these new units have with GPS, etc.

Any advice???

I think you should choose a fish finder gps combo as lowrance elite 5, elite 7. If you have more than $1000 budget, you could choose a lowrance HDS

The CHIRP technology sends out a series of pings, whereas the older tech sends out a single ping. It gives you a clearer picture and better chance of spotting fish. IIRC it sends on different wavelengths within the same burst. Less disruptions that way too.

The new Elite Ti models also comes with a transducer that let's you do some other sexy stuff such as downscan where you can see entire trees on screen. I just ordered the Hook 5 which don't have that function - then again it's gonna be used on a kayak and I can't use too much battery as well as an Elite 5 Ti would blow my budget.

Here's a few tips from a tech savvy friend of mine on his blog, most is in Norwegian but he's got some articles in English as well
And here's an article (In Norwegian, but he's got very few spelling mistakes so just use google translate. The pictures speaks for themselves however!) from our most recent trip together where we mapped an entire lake
3D contour maps is super sweet! With an Elite 5 or 7 you can upload these color maps to your unit as well (If for instance you have some forum/group that share's their depth logs), then you split the screen and have depth map+downscan+vertical column all in the same screen. I almost feel sorry for the fish with all this tech we got in this day and age, but that's a different story
