Default Modifying a Lipless Crankbait

Lipless crankbaits are responsible for countless fish being caught and many tournaments being won. Most anglers will use the bait exactly as it comes out of the package, however a handful of anglers will modify these baits to get the edge over the rest of the field. This is one of those modifications.

This modification is relatively a simple one. All you need is a bait, a small screw, an Xacto knife with a #11 blade in it, and a screwdriver.

To drill the hold you can use an electric drill but I prefer to use the Xacto knife. It's easy and clean and can be done even on the water.

Just push the point into the bait a hair then rotate the handle. The sharp blade will slowly drill its way in.

Continue to drill until you get a hole just slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw you intend to use.

You will end up with a nice neat hole, ready for your screw to be inserted.

Bury the screw all the way flush to the body of the bait and you are all set to fish.
If you are worried about leakage, a touch of clear nail polish over and around the screw will take care of that.
However if you have done the previous steps properly you will not need to worry about that as the screw will seal it self up nicely

Hope this tip helps you catch more fish!

I was wondering the same thing myself.. How does this modification help, is there a time it would not be used as opposed to when you use it?

Thanks in advance to whoever answers this.

One of the most productive ways to fish a lipless crankbait is to burn it back to the boat. But a regularly weighted lipless crankbait will only stay so deep as your burn it back. Adding weight lets the bait stay deeper while burning it back.

Jared, Thanks for the tip - have you experimented with the screw placement further back to see how it effects the fall on slack line? Just wondering.

no but that is a good idea to try.

I didnt come up with this idea myself. It was something I learned from one of our recent chats on Bait Modifications. I tried it out and liked it and tada...
