Default hook replacement on topwater lures.

Hi all:

I am new here, but have a question I thought you folks could help me with. Have any of you folks ever replaced the treble hooks on your top water lures like Jitterbugs and Hula Poppers with a single hook? I have a heck of a time digging those hooks outta some of the fish I catch. Was thinking maybe on replacing at least one of the two trebles with a single. Any advice would help and thank you, Rich.

Replacing treble hooks with single hooks has a few advantages...it obviously makes releasing the fish easier, and faster. An added benefit is lessening the chance of the other hook catching the angler!! This has become quite pupular with salt water fisherman.

You may want to start with just removing the front treble....It is much easier and safer removing the hooks if you can grab the front of the plug safely while doing so.

Another thing you could try is pinching down the barbs...this will make releasing a fish easier and faster as well. You may miss a couple of fish here and there, but not that many. It would again, as I mentioned earlier, make it easier to remove from yourself also, should the situation arise.

I keep some hooks with the barbs pinched down for when I am prefishing for a tournament, much easier to get the hooks out and if I lose them that just my version of quick release.

I have a friend who replaces every treble hook on every plug he buys with Excalibers just because they're super sharp. Some work out great. Some lures, especially the Zara Spook change action when you change the size or weight of the hooks. I'd say try it, if you don't like it, change it back.

On almost all my topwaters I`ve changed the rear hook to one size up and with either a skirt or a feathered hook.It didn`t seem to change the action. Most my topwaters are jitterbugs and hula`s.Some hula`s will sink alittle more in the back when you do it,but when you jerk it , it`s the same.
Experimental is the only way to find out what works best for you,so give it a go.
