Read.. What I mean by that is get your hands on as much info as possible either through magazines, books, or the internet. The old saying knowledge is power! Same is true in bass fishing. I have done a lot of reading last year and beginning of this year. I couldn't get on the water and apply it at the time but as soon as I was able to get on the water I applied what I learned and it has made me a better fisherman. Also watch shows like Bass Pro's, Bill dance and so forth. here is a link you can go to to watch shows online. http://www.watchtheoutdoors.com/channels/fishing.php.
Once you learn a technique go out and practice it until you get it down. Don't try to learn them all at once you may find you get frustrated more often then not. Good luck and good fishing

Read, read, read....There is so much information available nowdays it's incredible.
With that being said, it can be overwhelming...Pick one or two presentations you would like to start with, based on the waters you would fish most often, and the type of equipment you have to start with...

A good place to start is worm fishing...Plastic Worms...It is a fairly inexpensive starting point, and will teach you alot of the basic building blocks for learning how to fish plastics overall. A few bags of worms, a couple of sizes of hooks, a couple of sizes of weights, a rod and a reel.....Nothing fancy, nothing too elaborate...
This will get you on the water catching some fish, while you gain knowlwedge and information through reading articles, books, and watching videos or fishing shows...

A great starting point is browsing through this website...We have tons of great threads with peoples recommendations on how to fish certain presentations, accompanied by links to articles and/or other threads that cover the presentation.

Remember, nothing is better than hands on experience....Get your line wet and practice things as you read about them...If you can find some local club, or a family friend, school buddy, neighbor, etc that fishes, and spend some time with them.

Like MO and the others have said read a lot, and fish as often as possible, but with that in mind when you read try to find articles that fit the area you are in. That is to say if you read a ton of stuff about fishing in South Texas and you live in Canada it probably won't be of much help, sure, you may catch a few fish using the techniques in the article; but, if you read an article from someone in Canada you will catch many more fish. Second concentration is the all important thing especially when you first get started. When you hang a fish and land it, take just a few min. to think where you are on the water, what kind of cover is there here to draw the fish here, what kind of weather are you in right now (clear skies, overcast, warming, cooling) all of these things will help the next time you go out on the water to re-create the experience over and over.

The MOST important thing though is keep fishing fun. If you get into tournament fishing and it isn't just for the fun, and if you win a little money, GREAT, but then it starts to be like a JOB, it can turn into a real depressing time and ruins fishing for a lot of people. So just keep fishing fun..

If there is anyway I can help with bait info just give me a call or send a pm and I will tell you anything I know.
I would start off with worms, and jigs most of the bigger fish are caught on jigs

SALUTE
Frank Williams

Remember that you dont need a ton of lures, in every shape, style and color. I would just start with some plastics, in basic colors, a couple spinnerbaits, and top water lures. Dont get carried away and spend all your money on the fancy stuff, just keep it simple to start off. You are starting a sport that will give you ample opportunity to waste your money when the bait monkey strikes.

Try to go fish in the morning right arount sunrise and at night around sunset. Also, i've heard that the bigger bass sometimes feed around early afternoon. Now, I really never tested that theory but it's worth a shot. Fishing is a great sport and it grows on you trust me. As soon as you catch that first big fish, fishing becomes your life. At least, that's what happened to me! Lol.
